Sample Voice & Tone Guidelines

It’s not only what your brand says - it’s how you say it

Overview

The first section of a verbal guidelines page often includes a general overview of your brand's position on tone of voice. This can also include general information on what voice is and how it works in service of defining your overall brand.

Here, we use a hero and a 1-column text block. Heroes provide a good deal of visual impact, especially when used at the top of the page, and can include up to five unique slides, each showcasing combinations of video, images, text, and buttons.

Below, we'll show some of the most common components you can use to build your verbal guidelines and other pages.

Voice Principles

Most verbal guideline pages include voice principles - succinct phrases describing the brand voice and instructions on how to embody it.

Accordions are great structures to house voice principle content, particularly if there are 3 or more principles. Using accordions can help minimize large amounts of scrolling on a page and allows readers to engage with information at their own pace.

With accordions, you can choose to have an accordion open by default - like this one - allowing the reader to see the first accordion item without having to open the accordion first.

Dos & Don’ts

Verbal guidelines often include dos and don'ts to provide concrete examples of how to apply voice to messaging. These sections utilize "this" and "not that" or "we are" and "we aren't" to illustrate how the principles of voice can be applied to real world messaging.

Tabs allow readers to engage with content at their own pace and reduce unnecessary page scrolling. They're also a great structure for showing dos and don’ts.

Tabs allow users to progress through text and images in bite-size increments. Tab styling is taken from your brand system but the look of dividers and individual tab items can be personalized. Tabs can hold any components but only offer 2 layout options: content grid and 2-columns.

You can include up to 8 unique tabs. Each tab can hold text, videos, images, and buttons.

Tabs can hold content in 1 column or 2. Here, we've used 2 columns and added a text block alongside an image component.

Verbal Application

If your organization has some strong examples of your brand voice in action, a verbal application section can be used to showcase those examples visually.

Here, we use a gallery component to show several pieces of media at once. A gallery can be displayed as slides, a carousel, or a grid. When you add a gallery to a page, you'll be given the option to select images and videos from your Media Manager or upload new media.

More Resources

Have an external digital writing guide? Or links to resources like Writer.com you want to share with your team? Link cards are useful for highlighting additional content and linking between pages on your site or to external locations.

Link cards appear as cards within your page. They can feature up to 4 links leading to internal pages, external sources, or an email address.
